Attendees will participate in workshops\, rehearse as a bass orchestra\, and give an informal performance at the end of the day. \n\n\n\nAs part of the 2026 Bass Jam\, we will create a program designed for the classroom teacher in mind. Dr. Kelsey Nussbaum will facilitate breakout sessions for non-bass playing orchestra teachers to learn how to better support and differentiate for their bass students while also gaining hands-on bass practice. Please bring an instrument from your school to use during the Tucson Bass Jam. If you have questions about the teacher workshop element\, please reach out to Kelsey Nussbaum at knuss@arizona.edu. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration and Fees\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe registration fee per student for the Tucson Bass Jam is $10. Students will need to bring their own instruments\, bows\, and endpin stopper. Parents\, teachers\, or other chaperones may accompany their students to Tucson Bass Jam free of charge. We request that any student 13 or under be accompanied by a parent\, guardian\, or adult chaperone during the event. Fee waivers are available: please contact Dr. Alejo at palejo@arizona.edu for more information. \n\n\n\nRegistration: Participants should visit and register on the AZ-ASTA website. He is currently Professor of Bass and Director of the School of Music at Butler University in Indianapolis and Principal Bassist of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. He also plays as Principal Bassist with Sinfonia da Camera in Urbana\, Illinois\, and at the Bear Valley Music Festival in northern California. Before coming to Indianapolis\, David was Instructor of Bass at West Texas A&M University and principal with the Amarillo Symphony. He has been a member of the Dallas Chamber Orchestra and toured twice with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. \n\n\n\nDavid’s first private teacher was bass virtuoso Gary Karr\, with whom he studied in high school in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, and at the Hartt Music School\, University of Hartford\, in Connecticut. Summers were spent at Tanglewood and the Aspen Music Festival\, where he worked with Stuart Sankey. At Aspen\, he won the 1981 concerto competition. In Los Angeles in1988 he won the International Society of Bassists (ISB) Solo Competition\, the first prize being a solo debut at Carnegie Hall. David has made solo appearances\, both in recital and with orchestra\, and given clinics and masterclasses throughout the United States\, his native Canada\, and in South Korea\, Brazil\, Israel\, Scotland\, France\, Spain\, Portugal\, Denmark\, Germany\, Poland\, the Czech Republic\, and Holland. \n\n\n\nHe has performed at several summer chamber music festivals including Scotia Festival\, Killington\, and Cape May. In June\, 2001\, David hosted the ISB convention at Butler University for 800 bassists from 27 countries and is currently a Past-President of the ISB. He has been published in the ISB journal\, Double Bassist magazine\, the Suzuki Association of America journal\, and American String Teachers journal. He has recorded three solo CD’s (most recently in 2012)\, a duo CD with bassist Diana Gannett\, is a founding member of the bass quartet Bad Boys of Bass with whom he released a CD in 2006\, and he released a DVD of theater music in the spring of 2003. \n\n\n\nMost recently he was awarded the ISB’s Special Recognition Award for Solo Performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register for Bass Jam

Students are judged on technical and musical preparedness at specific levels (Foundation Level – Level 10) by an ASTA examiner of musical and pedagogical stature. A certificate of achievement is awarded for each level successfully completed. \n\n\n\nASTACAP was designed to help raise national standards of string playing and create a nationally  recognized system of evaluation.   Wide participation in ASTACAP programs around the country will create a more universal understanding of student progress for string teachers in every venue – private instruction\, school orchestra programs\, youth orchestra programs\, and higher learning institution music programs. \n\n\n\nAll string teachers are invited to involve their students in this fantastic program that encourages musical growth and achievement.  Teachers have the flexibility of choosing any solo piece appropriate for the corresponding evaluation level (including solos of commensurate level that are not listed in the handbook). In addition\, participating teachers are offered access to the ASTACAP Handbook\, an extremely comprehensive and valuable resource for repertoire\, scale books\, and etude books with eleven different levels per instrument! \n\n\n\nHigh standards of excellence are set for students by requiring specific technique that is appropriate for the repertoire of that level.  The evaluation requirements have built-in flexibility and are inclusive of all approaches (Suzuki\, traditional\, etc.).  Students are asked to demonstrate skills in memorization\, scales\, and sight-reading. Each student who participates will receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement from the internationally recognized American String Teachers Association. \n\n\n\nMore information on the national program can be found here.All participating teachers must be ASTA members. The day will include viola ensembles\, technique classes\, and elective classes. Elective classes for younger students will be a movement class and older students will learn about the college audition process. You will also get to meet your state Viola Professors from ASU\, NAU\, and UA in masterclasses*. This year’s theme centers around the concept of Vibrance. The event will feature repertoire from the Mosaic Anthologies and the diverse voices that have shaped music. Classes will include The Physics of Sound\, How to Practice\, and a Chart Reading class for playing non-classical music. This event is hosted by the University of Arizona and American String Teacher’s Association and features outstanding guest artists\, cello ensemble rehearsals\, masterclasses\, premieres of new works\, and a young artist competition. This year’s Cello Congress will feature the award-winning cellist Wesley Baldwin (Professor at the University of Tennessee) who contributed to the Mosaic Anthologies. The event will be held at the University of Arizona School of Music on Saturday\, January 16\, 2027. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFeatured Guest Artist\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWesley Baldwin\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWesley Baldwin is the Professor of Cello at the University of Tennessee\, where he received theChancellor’s Award for Professional Promise\, Dr. Baldwin previously taught at the University of Maryland and Florida International University. He founded and directs the Tennessee Cello Workshop\, an annual gathering of more than 170 cellists.An advocate for great music from all eras. He contributed to the creation of the Mosaic Anthologies that celebrate music by composers traditionally excluded from the pedagogical repertoire. This first set of volumes and their companion recordings feature works by Black and Latino composers from throughout history for the beginning to intermediate string player. His recording of music by Alan Shulman on Albany Records received widespread critical acclaim\, and he has also recorded for Naxos\, Zyode\, Innova\, and Centaur labels.As principal cellist of the New World Symphony\, Baldwin performed with many of the world’s greatconductors and toured internationally. He has performed chamber music at festivals across the UnitedStates and internationally in Italy\, France\, Spain\, Austria\, Brazil\, China\, and beyond. Dr. Baldwin holdsdegrees from Yale College\, the New England Conservatory\, and the University of Maryland. Winners must provide piano accompaniment at the Showcase Recital. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, any cellist can compete for the chance to perform the solo part of Price’s Adoration accompanied by the Advanced Cello Ensemble!
